Case 1: Due to wrong draftcalculation, smaller chimney diameter than required is chosen.
The boiler efficiency drops, sootforms, smoke back drafts occur and fuel consumption increases.
Solution: A chimney fan shouldbe employed. http://www.rotekchimneys.com/RotekEn/Baca-Fanlari-en
Case 2: In case of solidfueled, open fireplaces, if there is a negative air flow in the oppositedirection, the
living room is filled with smoke, especially during initial burning.
Solution: A chimney fan shouldbe employed. http://www.rotekchimneys.com/RotekEn/Baca-Fanlari-en
Case 3: In case of multipleboilers with cascade connected to a single chimney or single chimney – single
boiler withproportional burner, as the chimney is designed according to maximum capacity, when the number of working boilers or codensated devices are decreased or thecapacity is proportionally decreased, the chimney diameter, which is largerthan required in this case, causes excessive draft, increases condensation andinhibits full combustion.
Solution: Chimney fanautomation with pressure difference sensors. In addition, a motorized damper is
required for eachappliance in the cascade connection system.

Case 4: In shunt connectionsof multi floored buildings, due to back drafts caused by weather conditions,
insufficient draftin some floors or leakage of flue gas from working appliances to non-working appliancesmay occur. Hazardous flue gas may pass from chimneys to living spaces.
Solution: In negative systems, chimney fan and bi-metal dampers are used together.ln positive systems
(condensated orhermetic devices with cascade connection), bi-metal or motorized dampers are used.

Case 5: When the boilersystem works in on-off manner, when the boiler stops, the heat inside theboiler is
transferred to theatmosphere by natural convection and this causes fuel wastage.
Solution: Motorized orbi-metal dampers should be used.

Case 6: Excessive draft mayarise in the systems, whose diameter is not calculated properly and
manufactured largerthan required. The boiler does not work efficiently, risk of condensationinside the chimney increases, the fuel is exhausted through the chimney withoutbeing burnt and fuel consumption increases. Since the chimney gas flowdecreases, back drafts occur.
Solution: A seconder airdamper should be used to regulate the draft

Case 7: Flame breaks (boilerstops) may occur in the buildings with high chimneys, due to excessive draft.
Solution: A seconder airdamper should be used to regulate the draft.

Case 8: Frequent surges ofchimney draft occur due to frequent changes of climatic conditions or formation
of wind spaces.
Solution: A seconder airdamper should be used to regulate the draft.

Case 9: When the boilerstarts to run, if the boiler does not take the fresh air from the boiler roomfor
starting ofcombustion, in this case it try to pull the fresh air from the chimney, thenthe chimney çan be bent or twisted and it deforms.
Solution: A seconder airdamper should be used.

Case 10: The water vapor(formed with the combustion of the fuel) cools and condenses, especially in the
chimneys withimproper insulation. In the parts, which the boiler doesn’t work, if thehumidity inside the chimney is not dried the chimney life will shorten.
Solution: Motorized seconderair damper should be used.

The function of theseconder air damper is based on thepressure differences between the place
the heating systemis installed and the chimney. The pressure in the place the heating system is installedin approximately the same as the environment pressure, however, there is vacuuminside the chimney. When this vacuum reaches to a value set on the draftlimiter, the adjustment disc on the seconder air damper opens and lets additionalair enter into the chimney. Air is added to the system until the chimney draftreaches minimum draft requirement.
Case 11: Modern heatgeneration systems, especially those which provide energy savings, create
disturbing noises ofmostly low frequencies. Those noises and vibrations from the boiler disturb thepeople near the flue gas chimney.
Solution: Either active orpassive silencers and vibration absorbers should be used.
Case 12: The boilers pullfresh air from the environment and use it for combustion while working. The fresh
air is absorbed tothe boiler room from outside through the bottom vent. Cold outside air enteringand warm inside air existing through these openings cause the air consumed bythe boiler to be cold and since the boiler will have to heat the air more to compensatethe difference, the boiler and combustion efficiency will decrease.
Solution: Combustion airdamper should be used to control the room ventilation. |
